Bungie weasels out of Halo with an expansion pack
When I heard that Bungie was still on the hook for another Halo, I thought it’d be a major title– turns out it’s just Halo: Recon. They also mention Recon being finished “in a couple of months”. They’ve been making noise about getting away from Halo for a while now, and it looks like they found a pretty effective way to do it. Good for them– but of course it means they need to have a damned good second IP. Can they become a Blizzard-level studio? (No pressure, guys.)

An expansion pack does seem like a bit of a cop-out, but oh well. It will be interesting to see if they can break into another IP with their next full game - well, their first non-Halo IP in awhile. Sure, Marathon isn’t really that far removed from Halo (I’ve seen some wiki articles attempt to tie the two universes together), but Myth was a successful departure back in the day (and didn’t they make Oni as well?)
Still, those games are 10 years old now. I’m wondering what they’ll do in trying to make a modern game.

Yeah, I was a bit snarky with the “second IP” line.
Bungie’s been a sweet studio. If they’ve still got some of the old guard, they should be in good shape.
